Study finds criminal prosecution following accidents damages flight safety !

Sofia Michaelides-Mateou is a lecturer of law at the University of Nicosia and specializes in Air Law. She has presented numerous papers in international and local conferences and presented many seminars and lectures on a broad range of aviation topics. She has published widely on a number of aviation topics and is currently working on her first book which deals with Aviation Safety, Security and Crimes committed on board an aircraft, Liability issues and the Investigation of Aviation Accidents.
She has also been a legal consultant in a number of cases in which pilots and Air Traffic Controllers were prosecuted subsequent to a serious aviation accident.
Sofia has a BA LLB from the University of Witwatersrand SA, and has currently completed her Doctorate with Middlesex University UK, that deals with "Determining the intermingling between an aircraft accident investigation, the apportionment of blame and the determination of liability".

 

Captain Andreas Mateou is an A320 captain at Cyprus Airways and the Head of Flight Safety. He received his Private Pilots License in 1982 and in 1983 the FAA Commercial Multi Engine Pilots License and his Flying Instructors Rating. In 1984 he obtained his UK CAA Commercial Pilots License and in 1985 his Airline Transport Pilots License and was then employed as a Pilot in the UK. In 1987 he joined Cyprus Airways as a Co-Pilot and in 1994 was promoted to the post of Captain. In 2006 he obtained his TRI qualification for the A320 Fleet.

He has presented many aviation lectures and has published a book entitled "Cyprus Airways on a Collision Course". He has also been a legal consultant in a number of cases in which pilots and Air Traffic Controllers were prosecuted subsequent to a serious aviation accident. He has an LLB from the University of London, a MSc from the University of new South Wales and has completed his Doctorate with Middlesex University UK, that deals with ‘Determining the intermingling between an aircraft accident investigation, the apportionment of blame and the determination of liability’.
