Industrial dispute between FVFI and Icelandair!
By AEI Editor
Published: Apr 2, 2010

Some of the facts in this dispute:

1.        FVFI contract with Icelandair expired 01 November 2009. From the bank collapse in Iceland in October 2008 the engineers salary compared to the Icelandic cost of living index has decreased by more than 25 %. When again compared with foreign exchange rates for the Icelandic krona then the loss is a even more.

2.        After several unsuccessful negotiations meetings held with Icelandair last October and November the dispute was forwarded to the State Mediator for industrial disputes and 23 negotiations meetings have been held by the State Mediator office.

3.        FVFI called a work strike 22. February but this strike lasted only 9 hours and was settled by an agreement, but this agreement was then rejected by 93 % of the votes at a union meeting.

4.        Another strike was called  Monday 22. March but only 15 hours into the strike the Icelandic Parliament passed a law forbidding FVFI to strike until late November 2010. Thereby disarming the union from these negotiations and taking away the union`s human right to strike.

Presently the FVFI union are having unofficial talks with Icelandair and may have a possible solution to the problem, but this is not very appealing regading the engineers human right to strike.

A union meeting will be held in week 14 and FVFI will than decide on further action.
